The Gothic Quarter in short

The Barri Gòtic is the heart of Ciutat Vella, the old town of Barcelona. Plaça Reial lies right next to La Rambla, so the lanes begin right at the boulevard. From there the main stops follow a line: Plaça del Pi, the former Jewish quarter, Plaça Sant Jaume, the cathedral, Sant Felip Neri and Plaça del Rei.

Most visitors see the quarter on foot, either alone or on a walking tour. The lanes are narrow, so give yourself time and expect groups. The most useful numbers are below. If you want a guide, the walking tours below cover the same places.

The places in the quarter

What each stop offers.

The cathedral

The tourist visit costs €16 per person. Students up to 25 years and large or single-parent families pay €14, with proof at the desk. People with a recognised disability of 33 percent or more and ICOM members enter free. Weekday hours are 09:30–18:30, with last entry at 17:45. Saturdays and the eve of religious holidays run 09:30–17:15, last entry 16:30. Sundays and religious holidays are 14:00–17:00, last entry 16:30. Attending a service and visiting as a tourist are two different things, so do not treat the church as free to walk through.

Plaça Reial

An arcaded square dating from 1848, with a fountain of the Three Graces and two lamps designed by Gaudí. It is the meeting point of the free old-town walk and the easiest entrance to the quarter from La Rambla.

Back to the Rambla stops →

Plaça Sant Jaume

The square is officially in the Barri Gòtic, in Ciutat Vella, and the walking tour passes it on the way between the Jewish quarter and the cathedral.

MUHBA Plaça del Rei

The museum is at Plaça del Rei 7–9. The regular ticket is €7.30 and the reduced one €5.20, for students under 29, over-65s and groups of more than 10. It is open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–19:00 and on Sundays and holidays 10:00–20:00. It is closed on 1 January, 1 May, 24 June and 25 December. Entry is free on the first Sunday of the month all day, on other Sundays from 15:00, and for under 16s.

Plaça del Pi, Sant Felip Neri and the Jewish quarter

These are stops on the walking tour route, along with the Roman and medieval city. You pass them in small squares and narrow streets, so keep your phone and bag close and mind the crowds in the lanes.

Gothic Quarter walking tours and how groups work

How a free walking tour works, and the city's rules for groups.

A free walking tour of the quarter runs in English. It meets at the fountain on Plaça Reial and ends at Santa Maria del Mar, in El Born. The route covers Plaça Reial, Plaça del Pi, the Jewish quarter, Plaça Sant Jaume, the cathedral from outside, Sant Felip Neri, the Roman and medieval city, Plaça del Rei and Santa Maria del Mar. Entry to the cathedral is not part of it.

You decide the price at the end. A reservation is required, with a maximum of 20 people. Private groups of seven or more should book a private tour. The standard times are daily at 11:00 and 16:30 from 1 April to 31 October, and daily at 11:00 from 1 November to 31 March. There are no regular tours on 24 to 26 December and 1 January. A time on the schedule does not guarantee free places on your day.

The city asks groups to keep at least half of the street width free and to use whisper systems. Tour groups in the quarter work within these rules. See the tours page for walking tours and the food tour page for tapas in the evening. An evening tapas tour in the quarter runs 3.5 hours with up to 12 people and does not suit wheelchairs or pushchairs.
